Yoga is considered a form of complementary and alternative medicine utilizing the practice of mind and body, with origins in ancient Indian philosophy. There are many styles of yoga which combine physical postures, breathing techniques, and meditation. Yoga typically involves using your conscious mental process to do certain techniques-such as focusing attention on maintaining a specific posture-to suspend the stream of thoughts and relax the body and mind.

Yoga is a typically thought of as a form of exercise that stretches and strengthens the body through various poses, also known as Asanas. But, yoga is far more than a series of awkward poses and routines. Yoga in its full form combines physical postures, breathing exercises, meditation, and a distinct philosophy. Yoga is intended to increase relaxation and balance the mind, body, and the spirit.

Early written descriptions of yoga are in Sanskrit, the classical language of India. The word “yoga” comes from the Sanskrit word yuj, which means “yoke or union.” It is believed that this describes the union between the mind and the body. The first known text, The Yoga Sutras, was written more than 2,000 years ago, although yoga may have been practiced as early as 5,000 years ago. Yoga was originally developed as a method of discipline and attitudes to help people reach spiritual enlightenment. The Sutras outline eight limbs or foundations of yoga practice that serve as spiritual guidelines:

1. yama (moral behavior)

2. niyama (healthy habits)

3. asana (physical postures)

4. pranayama (breathing exercises)

5. pratyahara (sense withdrawal)

6. dharana (concentration)

7. dhyana (contemplation)

8. samadhi (higher consciousness)

The numerous schools of yoga incorporate these eight limbs in varying proportions.

HATHA yoga, the most commonly practiced in the United States and Europe, emphasizes two of the eight limbs: postures (asanas) and breathing exercises (pranayama). The principles of Hatha yoga involve perfecting the mind by way of perfecting the body. Some of the major styles of hatha yoga include Ananda, Anusara, Ashtanga, Bikram, Iyengar, Kripalu, Kundalini, and Viniyoga, some of which are described further below:

ASHTANGA yoga is considered a type of aerobic yoga as it involves quick and smooth transitions between poses.

KUNDALINI yoga involves awakening and focusing what is known as kundalini energy, or what is known as life energy that lies dormant in our bodies, which is represented by a coiled snake.

MANTRA yoga, however, focuses on calming the mind and body through the use of words and sounds. The well known ‘OM’ chant is commonly heard in this yoga practice.

Yoga is a very diverse practice, no matter which school you choose. People young and old can gain many benefits from regular yoga practices, and asanas (poses) can be adjusted to fit physical limitations and different levels of experience in the practice.

Yoga entails mastery over the body, mind, and emotional self, and transcendence of desire. It is said to lead gradually to knowledge of the true nature of reality.

The word Yoga can be defined as discipline. Yoga was developed by Patanjali, an Indian Hindu in the year three hundred. Yoga’s purpose includes making your body stronger, stretching your body’s muscles, and to help increase concentration. For others, Yoga will help them to relax.

Yoga has been embraced by many athletes and celebrities because of all the improvements it has on the body.

Flexibility is one of Yoga’s core focuses. You may have noticed the pretzel like moves that look hard to master. The best tip for accomplishing these seemingly difficult moves is to relax.

Breathing is a very important part of participating in Yoga. Breathing correctly while practicing Yoga will help you with physical control. In Yoga breathing is your life force, meaning your life is not counted in years or time passed, but in breaths taken.

Some people who practice Yoga adhere to strict guidelines to reach a higher level of consciousness. These guidelines include not lying, avoiding greediness, not stealing, and not hurting other people. Other observances are striving to be clean, happy with one’s life, practicing self control, and being devoted.

Yoga is all about control, users never force themselves to do an exercise. Yoga is done slowly, often easing into each exercise. If you simply cannot do a certain move, just wait until another day.

Concentration is very important in Yoga, because if tomorrows demands are what you are focusing on then you will not be able to concentrate on the balance you will need for each exercise. Balance is key to completing the many different moves so make sure you concentrate on every move you do.

Many Yoga exercises are very similar to what can be observed in nature, for instance the move called downward dog is named after a dogs posture. Other Yoga moves resemble shapes of a cat, tortoise, eagle, cobra and crab.

Every Yoga exercise is designed to promote calmness of ones self and overall health. Each and every move targets specific muscles in your body, including nerve endings, and glands.

Certain exercises were made to combat individual pains in your body, such as lower back pain. Yoga can also help defeat feelings of depression and fears that you may have.

Durability

You want to have a yoga mat that is going to last more than a few yoga sessions, and here is where durability comes into play. Buy a mat from a brand that is crafted well and will last for several years. Mats made of jute and/or rubber is recommended when durability is essential.

Eco-Friendly

Lastly, your mat should be eco-friendly and made from a material such as cork, jute and natural rubber. Environment-friendly, recyclable and non-toxic yoga mats can be a little more money but they are worth it when it comes to the environment. If you do get an eco-friendly yoga mat, get one that is 99% latex free. Latex has been known to provoke an allergic reaction in some people. There are some companies that make a natural rubber mat made with a proprietary formula that is 99% latex free. The are also a little more money but worth it.
